The Starting Resistor is a specialized functional resistor used in electric drive and electrical control systems. It is designed exclusively for current limiting, buffering and protection during the equipment start-up stage. It is widely compatible with various electrical devices, including AC and DC motors, high-power switching power supplies and industrial transmission equipment. Unlike conventional load resistors and braking resistors, it operates only during the transient start-up process and is disconnected from the circuit during steady-state operation.
During power-on start-up, electrical equipment - particularly high-power asynchronous motors and rectifier power supplies - produces extreme inrush current far exceeding rated operating levels, with peak values reaching 3 to 8 times the rated current. This phenomenon results from extremely low initial circuit impedance, instantaneous capacitor charging, and the absence of back electromotive force when rotors are stationary. Such excessive current can damage equipment insulation, burn out circuit components, and cause instantaneous voltage drops in local power grids, thereby interfering with the normal operation of other devices on the same circuit.
Developed to address these operational issues, the Starting Resistor is connected in series within the main circuit. By utilizing resistive power dissipation, voltage division and current limiting principles, it effectively reduces start-up inrush current, confines current peaks within safe equipment tolerance ranges, and slows the rise of voltage and rotational speed to achieve a smooth soft start. The component features fully automatic start-stop adaptation: it is integrated into the circuit for current limiting at initial power-on. Once the motor speed reaches its rated value and the power supply voltage stabilizes, the control system triggers contactors, relays or silicon controlled rectifiers to short-circuit and bypass the Starting Resistor. This completely removes the resistor from the working circuit, allowing the equipment to operate normally with minimal power loss.
Based on materials and structural designs, Starting Resistors are classified as wire-wound, iron-chromium-aluminum alloy, PTC thermistor, and carbon-ceramic composite types. Wire-wound resistors are the mainstream choice for industrial high-power equipment due to their superior heat dissipation, stable resistance values and strong impulse resistance. They support rated operating voltages up to AC 660V and DC 440V for 50Hz power frequency circuits, and are suitable for the start-up operations of industrial equipment such as cranes, water pumps, fans and compressors. With robust structures and wide operational adaptability, they are indispensable protective accessories for electrical systems.
